BOLSOVER STAFFORDS........

( well not literally, they have better manners)

Hi my name is Sharyn Stewart. I have been breeding Staffordshire Bull Terriers for over 30 years. My husband and I have semi- retired to 100acre beef farm in Hamilton where dogs can enjoy the freedom of country life.

I started my love of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier a long long time ago. It was Tammy a gorgeous wee girl, ''thanks Sandra', that stole our hearts. She was to be an "outside dog", .....we don't have dogs in the house. Husband built a very nice large kennel and run for her. Quite a feat as he is a farmer not a builder. When I bought Tammy home...the 5 children were enthralled. Husband looked at the wee scrap of a puppy....looked at the large wooden kennel in the yard....and muttered " its a bit small yet perhaps it can go in the laundry for a few nights. Well....we know what happened next ! Staffords are house dogs as we all know. The kennel did get used later, though, for girls in season.

From then on there has always been a stafford or two underfoot.

MY HISTORY and personal observations.

In 1999 I bred a litter from an English Imp dog that produced a white girl (Smurf) with a blue patch. This intrigued me, as I had never seen the blue colour on a stafford. Having previously completed a course in dog genetics I found it an interesting challenge to make some more of these lovely silver coloured puppies.

Little did I know then, that I was opening a pandora's box.

Blue staffords became very popular.

Because the blues where uncommon then, commanding a higher price (solely based on colour), they became the new "get rich quick" breed. What has followed has been a steady flow of imported "blue" staffords. I wonder if these importers have actually met any relatives of their breeding dogs, so as to judge their conformation and nature.

In my opinion, the standard of 'blue coloured' staffords in NZ is generally lacking in quality/ type because if the colour is the focus it doesn't take long for "type" to go out the window. There are obviously some nice ones too. Sadly people are still emailing/phoning me asking for a BLUE.... they don't want to know if I am a reputable breeder, or have nice dogs, they just want a BLUE....

The number of blue staffords born now, (all over the world) means that they are NOT RARE but maybe the most common colour bred now. This BLUE craze has been drowning out the other lovely stafford colours ....gorgeous brindles, pieds, whites and reds. But there is HOPE... I am starting to convince some people that what they really need is a puppy that will suit their family and lifestyle no matter the colour.

❌️❌️❌️ REGISTERED BREEDERS.❌️❌️❌️

A person only has to own a registered dog or bitch, join a club, pay the money to join DogsNZ , register a kennel name and "hey presto" a new registered breeder.

No experience, no knowledge of the breed or associated anomalies is required. Dogs NZ takes no responsibility for the resulting pups.Therefore you need to trust your breeder will be there for you, if problems do occur.

There are plenty of dedicated and trustworthy people with the best interests of the breed at heart from whom to get your new family member. .You need one of those people who will follow your pet's journey from puppy hood to adult and beyond.

It is buyer beware..ask a lot of questions and expect a lot of questions to be asked of you.

For many years now, I have been telling people enquiring about a puppy, that the main quality required in a family pet, is an excellent temperament, followed by good health, nice typical stafford type, then colour.

"THE MYTH".......

"Staffords are good with children" "the NANNY dog"

"ALL" staffords are NOT necessarily, "good with children". A good number of staffords are also really unreliable with other dogs. Some staffords are aggressive over territory or food. None of these traits belong in the family home.

Your family pet must be bred from parents with a background of years of dogs with "good" temperaments, before your breeder can guarantee this quality. Your breeder needs to know how her dogs react out in the real world. Keeping them in the backyard does not give that information. This is why ALL Bolsover stud dogs (entire) are family pets first and foremost. I know how they act in the 'off lead' dog parks, at the beach around kids, babies, other dogs, pets etc. My boys have to have exemplary natures before they can make Bolsover puppies.

Your pup is very much born with its temperament. It is not something you give it by rearing it properly. If your pup is innately aggressive or hyperactive it's parents and/or grandparents likely were too. Correct rearing is obviously necessary..... but trying to deal with an unruly, unbiddable pup with a bad temperament, is not for the novice owner.

To make rearing as trouble free as possible Bolsover pups come with heaps of written instructions and an open phone line for your many questions.

I breed for Temperament Temperament Temperament.... this could be why I have current owners, as well as their grown children and friends, coming back for their 2nd/3rd/4th and even 5th Bolsover puppies. It is called a good reputation and is gained by years of doing the best I can for my puppy owners.

There are umpteen owners who are more than willing to have you call for a chat about their Bolsover dogs if you are interested in a Bolsover puppy.

I do not finalise which puppies go to which owners until pups are around 5/6wks old. I like to be as sure as I can be that the pups go to the most appropriate home/family. Need to be able to assess puppy's nature.
I don't allow people pick the pup with white feet and a blaze for instance, at 1 week old.
I obviously want to get you your absolute dream pup, but you may have to wait if too fussy about colour.
